SHADOW'S COMMENTS

Directed by Aaron Kopff
Shadow says: Definitely one of the better “live action” videos, kind of humorous, kind of odd, kind of mean-spirited but effective. Many of the filmed entries had one hook that just sort of repeated, so I appreciated the story telling approach here.

Directed by Nelson Chan
Shadow says: Obviously a cut above, this is an outstanding video. Great story, with an effective "anime" feel. My only gripe is that it would be a perfect video for "The Tiger," not "This Time!" Perhaps that can be arranged? A top notch effort, though. Directed by Aaron Kopff

This one is great because there is an effort to translate every lyric into a visual equivalent. I love videos that stick to the theme and context of the song, rather than just layer the music with random imagery. I also liked the 80's "Nintendo" feel of the graphics. Plus, it's fun and easy to watch. I was surprised at how many entries had a dark feel, so this was a nice antidote Cartoon Strip

Shadow says: Another video with a lot of effort put in. The director apparently borrowed some images from the photo gallery on my website to bridge the narrative together. The result: lots of out-of-context photos of me. Which makes it all slightly embarrassing.

Directed by Anton Huml
Shadow says: Nice chalk animation that must have taken a long time to make. Similar to “Pixel” in that there was an attempt to visualize the lyrics, and I loved the resolution at the end. This one almost made my top three.

Directed by Alessandro Giorgini
Shadow says: Amusing animation treatment, I particularly like the renderings of the coworkers at the office. It’s funny how everyone thinks I still wear beanies…

Directed by Irena Andreic & Marko
Shadow says: This entry is unique in that it combined the three main types of videos we received: animation, live action, and found or sampled footage. In this case, the director animated over the top of found live film, creating a hypnotic effect.

Directed by Segolene d'Herbecourt & Fabien Vantroys
Shadow says: I tried to pick videos for the top 10 that looked as though a lot of effort was put in; and that's certainly the case here. An interesting visual concept that works well, it's obvious that this director has some real talent.

Directed by Florent Lacroix
Shadow says: This video was typical of at least half a dozen entries playing on the theme of giving up the daily grind in favor of doing it their way. The masked character on the cover of The Outsider, the result of a brainstorm between Banksy, Paul Insect and I, seems to have really resonated with many of the contest entrants.

Directed by Daniel Massaranduba
Shadow says: Lots of videos used borrowed footage, a lot of it random and not pertaining to the subject. This one really isn’t an exception, but at least the source material is unique and pleasant to look at. It was made more relevant in my life by the fact that I had just been to Rio for the first time.
